More than one in four U.S. hospitals offers alternative and complementary therapies such as acupuncture. In light of the recent scare with medical drugs more and more people are looking to alternative medicine.  A new survey shows that one out of every 4 mainstream medical institutions is now providing complementary and alternative therapies to meet this growing demand.

"More and more, patients are requesting care beyond what most consider to be traditional health services," say researchers Sita Ananth of Health Forum, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, and William Martin, PsyD, of the College of Commerce at DePaul University in Chicago, in a news release. "And hospitals are responding to the needs of the communities they serve by offering these therapies."

There is a trend to a more holistic treatment of a person verses traditional Western medical treatment of the disease or symptom.

A 2002 Center of Disease Control survey showed that more than 50% of all Americans thought combining alternative and complimentary medicine with conventional medicine would be helpful; and that number is growing quickly..

Alternative Medicine Goes Mainstream

A 2005 survey mailed to more than 6,000 U.S. hospitals, conducted and published by the American Hospital Association every two years, shows the percentage of hospitals offering one or more complementary and alternative procedures increased from 8% in 1998 to 27% in 2005.

Among hospitals offering complementary and alternative medicine services on an outpatient basis the top three were massage therapy (71%); tai chi, yoga, or chi gong (47%); relaxation training (43%), and acupuncture (39%)

Top inpatient services were massage therapy (37%), music/art therapy (26%), therapeutic touch (25%), guided imagery (22%), relaxation training (20%), and acupuncture (11%).

Insurance Coverage

Some insurance companies currently cover all acupuncture costs; other companies do not yet recognize the value of acupuncture. Each health policy must be reviewed to determine acupuncture benefits. More and more insurance companies are before you accept their recognizing the value of providing coverage for medical acupuncture services. You can help by insisting that your insurance company offer you reimbursement for medically indicated acupuncture treatments policy.
